whiteoutTM
Earlier this year The Great Barrier Reef Foundation welcomed secondary schools to its whiteout program.
whiteout was designed to engage secondary school students with leading scientists in a bid to rasie awareness and education about the effect of coral bleaching on The Great Barrier Reef.
Stage 1 of whiteout was the Reef 101 lecture. This lecture by Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, a leading coral reef researcher, presented the fundamentals of the case for coral reefs in a climate change affected world. Reef 101 was the pre-brief for and starting point of Stages 2 and 3 of whiteout.
The “Now You See It, Now You Don’t” forum, a panel discussion at the Queensland Ideas Festival, attracted between 100 students and panellists about the effects of global warming and the bleaching of coral on the Great Barrier Reef. Panel members included:
- Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, Director Centre for Marine Studies at the University of Queensland
- Mrs Judy Stewart, Managing Director, The Great Barrier Reef Foundation
- Ms Nadja Kunz, a member of the State Youth Environment Council
The forum was the first step for students to begin thinking about how they can make a difference in their own lives to help eliminate the effects of global warming, and in doing so, join in the fight to save the Reef.
A competition on the day saw the students enter short slogans for whiteout. Go to our Slogan Competition to see all the entries and the winners.
For those who attended the forum, this is the perfect place for you to continue on this journey. For those who missed the forum, DON’T WORRY, everything you need to know is right here!
