Heart Reef was discovered in 1975 by an Air Whitsunday pilot.
The best view of Heart Reef is from the air – by plane or helicopter – because you can’t swim or dive or visit by boat due to its highly protected status.
It’s located in Hardy Reef in the Whitsundays, approximately 60 km from the mainland.
It’s a coral bommie – an outcrop of coral reef – that has naturally formed into a heart shape.
With a diameter of just 17 metres, it’s a drop in the ocean compared to the whole Great Barrier Reef’s 2,300 km length!
